It was another tough weekend for Ryan Wells, but the Estenson Racing rider overcame adversity to score points Saturday night at the Texas Half-Mile, round three of the American Flat Track AFT Singles Championship.
The day started out great for the 2016 AFT Singles champ, who was the fastest qualifier on his Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F. Wells went on to finish fourth in his heat after a difficult gate choice. Unfortunately, a jumped start in the Semi slowed his forward progress even further. Wells used his provisional to get into the Main, but starting from the back of the grid is a big challenge in a stacked AFT Singles class. Wells put his head down and rode a strategic race in tough conditions to finish 13th.
The Estenson Racing squad heads west to their home race in Chandler, Arizona, next Saturday, April 27, for the first running of the Super TT.
Ryan Wells – AFT Singles #94:
“There were pros and cons to the day, for sure. We started the day awesome; fastest in qualifying, so it’s kind of a bummer to end up where we did. For the heat races, and especially for the first heat, you don’t get to see anybody start, and they make you choose inside or outside when you’re in staging without getting to look at the track. I obviously didn’t make the right decision and I spun the tire up. We fought back from that, but mistakes hurt us. Hopefully we can try to avoid the little ones. I also need to get better starts and we need to try to put a whole day together. It seems like we’ve been fast at both ends of the day, just not the whole day. So hopefully in this six-race-straight sprint here, we can get in the groove. We’re not a 13th-place team.”
