Jake Johnson Welcomes The Return To The Clay In New York

Estenson Racing’s Jake Johnson likes those clay-groove tracks. So after back-to-back cushion tracks on the 2018 American Flat Track calendar, the two-time Grand National Champion looks forward to the New York Short Track at Weedsport Speedway on Saturday, July 7.

Although not a home track for “Jersey Jake,” who now calls Pennsylvania home, the New York track sort of feels like home with the added benefit of racing there before. Granted, that was 18 years ago and before the facility received a host of improvements, but Johnson feels that it will be familiar territory and the perfect place to build on his progress on the Indian Scout FTR750.

“Weedsport is a little more my style: a clay short track, little half-mile; It’ll be good. Not really a hometown race for me, but it’s within driving distance so it’ll be nice to have some friends and family there. I raced that place back in 2000. That was my first pro sport race. I know the facility has changed a lot, but I think the track is similar to what it was then. I remember it being a pretty cool track.

“Hopefully we keep climbing up the ladder, making improvements, and at least get a top five or something. We’ve been struggling this year. It’s a little bit of everything I guess; some crashes and unforeseen circumstances have kind of got us throughout the year. I’m hoping to turn that around in New York.”

The New York Short Track is streamed live, Saturday, July 7, on FansChoice.TV starting with practice at 3:00 p.m. ET, followed by Opening Ceremonies at 5:45 p.m. ET, Heats at 6:00 p.m. ET and the Main Events at 9:05 p.m. ET. Catch the race on NBCSN, July 15 at 1:00 p.m. ET. For tickets and additional information about the event: http://www.americanflattrack.com/events.
